Drake Bell gets 'Honest' about his friendship with Josh Peck

Updated

Drake Bell, artist and actor of the hit Nickelodeon series, "Drake & Josh," sat down with BUILD Series for a conversation about his latest four-track dance-pop EP, titled Honest, and everything else that's been going on in his life.

Bell is currently working as an independent artist. He's able to have a lot of creative control including how his music videos look like as well as getting to really dig deep in crafting his current sound. This week he released the highly anticipated music video for the single, "Honest."

Bell credited his acting skills to making the video, which was done on a shoestring budget. "I got to jump in the freezing cold ocean. We were shooting that in December. It was ice [cold]! That's acting! All my acting chops were used in that video."

Overall making music videos is still an awkward process for Bell as compared to just performing naturally on stage.

"When you have a camera in front of you, like, do I sing to the camera? You just kind of feel dumb. You just kind of have to lose yourself and be like 'All right, I trust you guys that this looks cool," the singer said.

While also promoting the release of his music video for "Honest," Bell also gave us an update on his friendship with his "Drake and Josh" co-star Josh Peck.

"He and I have such a connection. It's weird man. We've been together since we were kids. I remember when we were 11 or 12 years old, we were on the 'The Amanda Show,' I would go hang out at his house, we would have sleepovers and sit up at night and asked, 'What our show is going to be about?' and we would come up with these ideas and not even be thinking we would ever have a show really. This was years before "Drake & Josh," it was just us fantasizing."

Working together on-set at such an early age elicited that brotherly connection that even their non-verbal communication struck a chord between the two. Fast-forward to one of Peck's most-recent work, the short-lived FOX sitcom "Grandfathered," where the two were able to reunite and they got to have scenes with each other for the first time in nearly a decade with Bell making a cameo appearance.

"Man, we fell right back into it. I'm like 'Dude, I told you there's something there between us' ... it's once in a lifetime in this business. It's a Martin and Lewis, it's an Abbott and Costello, it's a Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. Gene Wilder isn't going to find another Richard Pryor, you know, I'm not going to find another Josh," Bell explained.

However, last year it wasn't always sunshine and daisies for Bell and Peck: For those who forgot or weren't aware, Bell wasn't invited to Peck's wedding last summer which created a temporary tiff between the two buddies. Long story short, this caused an online uproar with their fans as to whether or not they were still going to be cordial with one another or will they end their friendship.

Fortunately, the dust settled and they eventually rekindled their friendship when they met in person again at the MTV VMAs last August.

"We have our tiffs sometimes. We're so close. Having that type of relationship especially in Hollywood, in this business, to have somebody you can call your friend and you know intimately and closely, I mean that's priceless!"

The brotherly love for each other looks to be mutual for now. We'll just have to wait and see if Josh attends Drake's wedding.
