David Lynch's forays into music have always been whimsical and weird, but by teaming up with mysterious singer Chrysta Bell, the veteran filmmaker is taking a more melodic turn while retaining his distorted rasps. "Bird of Flames," a track off Bell's album This Train, has all the strange qualities of a Lynch piece, but with the added sweetness of Bell's crystalline vocals.
The song's accompanying video, directed by Chel White, will definitely freak you out. A writhing dancer seduces us into a dimly lit cantina where plainclothes men watch Bell being born from a white veil.
"The chorus for 'Bird of Flames' is a significant and transcendent moment on This Train. When David first played the track for me I was transfixed by the power of the lyric and the way his voice delivered the melody," Bell tells Spinner.
"Adding my vocals and making it a duet was incredibly meaningful to me and gave the song a new dimension. We knew we wanted a video, but finding a way to visually capture the uplifting yet darkly penetrating energy of the song was going to be a challenge. Chel White's sublime talent for unusual, compelling and thought-provoking imagery was beautifully matched for the music. He did a magnificent job."
Bell will be performing tonight (Aug. 2) at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles. If you're in the area, make sure to get out and see this awesome talent.
