It was 21 years ago today that alternative touring festival Lollapalooza made its debut at the Compton Terrace in Phoenix, Arizona.

Organized by Perry Farrell and headlined by his band Jane's Addiction, the original lineup would also feature Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nine Inch Nails, Henry Rollins Band, Living Color, Violent Femmes, Fishbone, Rage Against the Machine and the Butthole Surfers at various dates across North America.

It was a very exciting and very different time back then and "alternative" music was still this crazy, new underground phenomenon that wasn't sold out yet (that would be officially Sept. 29, 1992 -- the release date for Stone Temple Pilots' Core). The only size t-shirts bands would sell at the merch tents were extra-large and if your Doc Martens were anything less than eight-holes you were considered a total square.

It was also pre-internet, pre-Warped Tour, and pre-Nirvana Nevermind and Pearl Jam Ten. So basically it was like being musical cavemen/pioneers.

And it was awesome.

With that in mind, we crowd surfed along on a wave of nostalgia and found some photos from the first Lollapalooza tour along with some related period band shots. To see said shots just click and launch the gallery below.
