Peter Hayes, drummer for British rock band Echo Lake, died on the morning of June 21. According to NME he was 25.

"I can't believe I'm actually typing these words, we're all completely devastated and shocked," the band's guitarist Thom Hill wrote on its site, saying Hayes was a "close friend and brilliant drummer." "Even in his last few weeks he would be sitting up in his hospital bed smiling and having a laugh with me."

The band also described Hayes as an "incredibly hard worker."

"If you ever saw us play live then you'll know what a great drummer he was," the band said. "I've been in 4 different bands over the past 10 years and while the line ups changed around us, me and Pete were always playing together. It was such a privilege to play music with him."

Hill also recalled the band in its infancy performing in different clubs with a then-underage Hayes, telling promoters they were of legal age to enter clubs to play the gigs.

"I'm really glad that the four of us moved to London, met Linda [Jarvis] and formed Echo Lake," Hill added. "I know he was really excited about the album [Wild Peace] finally coming out and the possibilities that lay ahead of us. I can't believe that he won't be around anymore to see them out with us."

The band was scheduled to play a few shows in early July in support of Wild Peace, which was being released today (June 25) on Slumberland Records.

While fans and friends expressed their condolences via Twitter, the group said via Facebook they were passing the various "kind words and tributes" to Hayes' family.
