Tegan and Sara, Dears, BSS Join Arcade Fire Supporting Quebec Student Protests
After last weekend's performance on Saturday Night Live with Mick Jagger, Montreal's Arcade Fire were shown wearing small red patches on their clothes, a reference to the ongoing student protests against tuition hikes taking place in Montreal and throughout Quebec. The protests, which recently surpassed the 100-day mark, have garnered attention both in Canada and internationally.
Now various musicians with close connections to the Montreal music scene have been weighing in on the nightly protests.
"Hundredth day......Very good #redsquare," Stars and Broken Social Scene singer Amy Millan tweeted on Tuesday. "The imbalance of funds and power is nauseating and we are done."
On Thursday evening Millan noted how the protestors were literally getting close to home.
"Thousands of protesters coming down my tiny street right now in front of the baby's room while she sleeps," she wrote. "Bring her dreams of revolution!!"
Broken Social Scene lead singer wants more than dreams of revolution, he wants action.
"revolutions take too long," Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew tweeted on May 18.
"So inspired by what is happening in Montreal: Night demo illegal but peaceful," Tegan and Sara tweeted on May 23 with a link to a Montreal Gazette article.
Meanwhile, The Dears took to their website and Twitter page on May 14 to say, "From 2001 to 2012, This Is The Summer Of Protest." The link also included the song "Summer of Protest" the band wrote which appeared on their 2002 Protest EP. Earlier this week The Dears
