Joe Sell Dead: Lucky Boys Confusion Guitarist Passes Away at 33
Joe Sell, a guitarist for Chicago rock group Lucky Boys Confusion, was found dead on Chicago's West Side on Tuesday. He was 33.
According to the Chicago Tribune Sell was found in a location close to the group's rehearsal space. The cause of death has yet to be confirmed with toxicology reports pending. Earlier this year Sell had been admitted to hospital for problems with his pancreas, bandmate Kaustubh "Stubhy" Pandav said.
"One of the greatest memories I will always have of him is showing him a song, and while I'm showing it to him you could see his mind working and writing the parts in his head," Pandav told the paper. "It was just brilliant. To watch him work, he really was a wonderful guitar player, a wonderful musician."
After teaching himself to play guitar while in high school, Sell and other musicians formed Lucky Boys Confusion in 1997. The band released two albums on Elektra beginning with 2001's Throwing the Game and the follow-up, Commitment, which was produced by Sublime's Michael Miguel Happoldt. The band was perhaps best known for the songs "Fred Astaire" and "Dumb Pop Song."
In 2004 the group was dropped by the label but released another album, How to Get Out Alive, in 2006. Later that year the band announced it was going on a short hiatus before releasing a new album of old demos and rarities in 2009 called Closing Arguments.
Although the band wasn't touring or recording as much as in previous years, Pandav said Lucky Boys Confusion played about a dozen shows each year around the Chicago area.
