The most recent leg of Bob Dylan's Never Ending Tour wrapped in November, and he's got nothing on the books until April. What's he been up to? Recording a new studio album, Los Lobos multi-instrumentalist David Hidalgo has revealed.

Chatting with the Aspen Times, Hidalgo says he recently finished sessions with Dylan at Jackson Browne's studio in Los Angeles. Hidalgo played on Dylan's two most recent album -- 'Together Through Life' and 'Christmas In the Heart,' both released in 2009 -- and in addition to reprising his role as accordionist, he added the tres, a guitar-like Mexican instrument.

"He'd say, 'Wow, what's that?'" Hidalgo said, recalling Bob's taste for south-of-the-border flavors. "He liked the sound. So we'd get it in there."

The forthcoming album will be Dylan's 35th studio effort, and while Hidalgo didn't say much about what to expect, "the unexpected" -- perhaps Dylan's two favorite words -- sounds like a safe bet.

"It was a great experience," Hidalgo said. "And different. Each one has been different, all completely different approaches. It's an amazing thing, how he keeps creativity. I don't see how he does it."
