In 'Big Miracle,' a movie based on a true story, Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski play a couple of do-gooder Alaskan ex-lovers who must mobilize politicians and businessmen to save a family of majestic maritime mammals trapped in Arctic ice. This one promises drama, cutesy laughs and plenty tugs on the ol' heartstrings, and as such, Passion Pit's 'Moth's Wings' was a great pick to soundtrack the trailer.
The song, taken from the Massachusetts electro-pop group's 2009 album 'Manners,' has the soaring, cathartic feel you want in a movie preview. "You're just like your father/buried deep under the water," leader Michael Angelakos sings, sounding earnest without going all cornball.
Speaking of cornball, John Mayer is an avid fan, and in a 2009 blog post, he called 'Moth's Wings' "one of the best songs" he'd heard in a long time, adding, "It sounds like the hope I have for the summer ahead." Indeed, this one sounds like a classic warm-weather jam, but it works just as well here, set against images of whales splashing water on a mugging Ted Danson.
