Six months ago, Boy George took a look at his beloved cigarettes and asked, "Do you really want to hurt me?" When he decided the answer was yes, he gave up smoking, and now he's urging Adele to do the same.

In an interview with the U.K. newspaper the Daily Mirror, the Culture Club frontman said the British soul diva should consider nixing the habit, which may have contributed to her recent health troubles.

Earlier this month, after canceling the remainder of her 2011 tour dates, Adele underwent surgery to remedy a bleeding polyp in her throat. She's expected to make a full recovery, but given her fondness for cigs -- she once said she'd choose smoking over singing -- she could be headed for future vocal trouble.

George said quitting smoking was "the best thing I ever did," and that's saying something, seeing as how he's struggled with addiction to more serious substances, including heroin, throughout his career.

"If you're a singer and you smoke it really isn't a great idea," he added. "I used to try to convince myself it made me sound jazzier. It was very difficult to give up, but I'm so glad I did."
