David Byrne and Will Oldham fans rejoice. The pair will pen music for a new Sean Penn vehicle 'This Must Be the Place.' Named after a Talking Heads song, the Paolo Sorrentino-directed film stars Penn -- bearing a striking resemblace to the Cure's Robert Smith -- playing a retired rock star embarks on a revenge mission to find his father's ex-Nazi war criminal executioner.
As Byrne told Time Out London, both he and Oldham will handle the soundtrack and Byrne will play a bit part in the movie with a performance of the title track that, according to Byrne's blog, features some odd stagecraft. It's unknown if the two will hit the studio together to work on tracks or if each songwriter plans to submit their own original recordings for the soundtrack. Oldham has a long career as an indie actor in films like 'Old Joy,' yet he has rarely supplied soundtrack material for other films.
Before the release of 'This Must Be the Place,' Oldham will also release a new 10-inch single with his backing band the Cairo Gang. Dropping Feb. 22 via the songwriter's longtime label Drag City, the single, 'Island Brothers'/'New World,' will be sold in order to benefit a charity called Edge Outreach. A faith-based organization that provides water purification for underserved areas, the non-profit's funds are currently focused on training Haitians to purify their own water.
