As Spinner previously reported, the Airborne Toxic Event returned to their hometown of L.A. after performing 354 gigs around the country in support of their 2008 self-titled debut. Rather than just play a standard venue, the band ended up performing at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall with string virtuosos the Calder Quartet, a high school marching band, a teen girls' choir and troupe of East L.A. dancers.
"If you'd have asked me two years ago, I would have said the possibility that we would sell out Disney Hall was about as likely as playing a show on the surface of the moon," frontman Mikel Jollett tells Spinner of the playing the famed venue.
Now, that concert was been memorialized in a new DVD/CD combo, 'All I Ever Wanted: Live From the Walk Disney Concert Hall.' Of an evening that included such highlights as a cover of the Ramones' 'Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio?' and a 10-minute version of the rocker 'Missy,' one of the standouts is their string-laden version of 'Sometime Around Midnight.' Already a live powerhouse, the anthemic ode to lost love gets a shot in the arm thanks to the Calder Quartet's frenetic performance.
