Disco Biscuits Guitarist Injured in 'Basic Roughhousing' Accident
Fans who caught the Disco Biscuits at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami -- and several shows prior -- were in for a bit of surprise when they learned that the lead role of guitarist Jon Gutwillig would be performed by an understudy. At least, that's the way it may have seemed, but fans need not worry: Gutwillig will be back soon.
Gutwillig had an accident after a recent show at The Egg in Albany, N.Y. and broke his wrist in two different spots. "Basic rock 'n' roll post-show roughhousing," bassist Marc Brownstein explains to Spinner. Still, the injury was severe enough to require surgery.
The band postponed a show at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, N.J. but continued on with several others. "The main reason we sought to keep the shows going without our leader was the Bisco Power Mission charity event," Brownstein says. The event was a fundraiser, in partnership with HeadCount, to help retrofit a Philadelphia public school with solar power.
The band also soldiered onwards with their sold-out show in Boston and their set in Miami's Bicentennial Park for Ultra. Chris Machetti (Raq), Joe Zarick (Indobox) and longtime Biscuits friend and conspirator Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past, American Babies) all came to the rescue.
"When Chris and Tom were playing together, we recognized their amazing chemistry and decided the best call moving forward would be to bring them both with us to Florida," says Brownstein. "Jon came down as well and we all hung out and had a great time. Jon got the amazing once in a lifetime experience of seeing his own band play a show."
Brownstein, who had that experience once at a show back in 2000, says that Gutwillig is expected to make a full recovery by the end of April. But he'll return to the stage before then, in a
