TAB the Band Mix Blues, Rock and Campfire Sing-Alongs on New Album
For their third album, 'Zoo Noises,' TAB the Band vary between garage and blues-influenced rock songs with acoustic, campfire-style sing-alongs, an approach singer/bassist Adrian Perry says stems from a more relaxed atmosphere in the studio.
"We don't want to get pigeonholed as one type of band or for doing one kind of thing," Perry tells Spinner. "Previously, we kind of limited ourselves to the types of songs we would include on an album, but this time around we just kind of let the song dictate what we did. If a song was sounding like it would be great acoustic, then we would really carry that idea all the way."
The band, originally based in Duxbury, Mass., gets its moniker from the first letter of the founding members' names: Adrian, his brother, Tony, who plays guitar (both are the sons of Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry) and drummer Ben Tileson. 'Zoo Noises,' which is named for a line from 'Arrested Development,' is also their first record with guitarist/keyboardist Lou Jannetty, who Adrian says brings a "big '60s rock-pop" sound to the band's new two-guitar attack.
The resulting effort blends influences like Perry's favorites, Cheap Trick and the Beatles, as well as more blues and folk sounds, some of which were inspired by a clip Tony found online.
"Tony pulled up this YouTube clip of some dudes in Arkansas sitting in the middle of a trailer park, just picking away on some song -- just these two dudes sitting there next to their dog and some empty cans of Miller Lite," Adrian recalls. "Tony was like 'Let's write a song like this,' so I grabbed this dulcimer we had sitting around, came up with a melody line and within an hour we were recording 'A Girl Like You' with whole instrumentation.
