Duncan Sheik Working on New Pop Record

It's been awhile since Duncan Sheik's made a proper pop album -- the last one was 2006's 'White Limousine' -- but to be fair, he's been a bit busy. As we previously reported, Sheik recently opened his second stab at musical theater with 'Whisper Town,' his follow-up to 'Spring Awakening,' and now he's looking forward to getting back to writing self-contained songs.
"I'm halfway through a regular Duncan Sheik, arty-pop record that has nothing to do with musical theatre," he tells Spinner. "I should get it done this year and I'm enjoying getting back to writing songs again. It's not that it's a big long narrative arc and instead, trying to tell a story in three minutes instead of 120 minutes."
While Sheik didn't want to go into too many details regarding the actual songs, he did take time to reflect to us about Lea Michele, who anchored 'Spring Awakening' for years as Wendla and is now enjoying a tidal wave of success on the campy high school drama, 'Glee.'
"[She's] fantastic and I'm totally psyched for her," he says. "If all my efforts to turn them into stars would finally bare fruit, that would be awesome."
The soundtrack to Sheik's current production of 'Whisper House' has been out for over a year now, and we can safely say that even if you haven't seen the play, it will still tide fans over. Sheik suggests listening to the song 'Earthbound Starlight,' for starters. "It's a good takeaway song," he says. "Not that there's such a thing as a radio song on the record, but if there were, that would be it."
