Mike Doughty Holds Q&A Sessions With Audiences on Tour

May 11th 2009 3:00PM

Mike Doughty has always tried to keep things interesting. Case in point, his aptly named 'The Question Jar Show,' which the former Soul Coughing frontman is currently bringing to venues along the West Coast. The setup? His acoustic guitar, one accompanist (on cello, mostly), and a glass jar. Inside the jar are question cards filled out by audience members before the set, and Doughty answers a few of them throughout the night.

While this could lead to eye-rollers like "Will Soul Coughing ever get back together?" or "What's your problem with Starbucks?" the questions at Saturday's gig in San Francisco made for an entertaining evening. For example, we now know that Doughty is enthusiastic about pickles, prefers Jimi Hendrix over Stevie Ray Vaughan, takes Macs over PCs, and is possibly afraid of trees. The first word that comes to his mind is "inscrutable," if he could tour with any other artist it'd be John Zorn, and if his music tastes like anything it's yogurt.

Among other bizarre disclosures, Doughty shared his theory that Super Mario shot Notorious B.I.G. and that he wants to star in a video game so he can shoot people "with ice cream cones." He also revealed that his desert island band would be AC/DC. "They only have one song," he said. "But it's enough for me." If you want to hear more of these interesting, revealing tidbits from Doughty in person, you better hurry -- the tour ends Friday night at Seattle's Triple Door.
