Trouble Andrew Credits Success to His Fiancee, Santogold

February 4th 2009 2:00PM

Self-professed crunk rocker Trouble Andrew's self-titled debut album is out Feb. 10, and he knows full well it'll draw comparisons to fiancé Santi White -- aka Santogold -- when it drops.

"We're both doing progressive music," he tells Spinner. "We're both just trying to do something new and creative. We're both pushing the boundaries, and that's probably why we're attracted to each other -- beside the music [and] just on the day-to-day basis."

Andrew, a professional snowboarder and Olympic vet, met Santogold through mutual friends one day during a Burton trip to New York, just more than four years ago. "I left for Switzerland or something the next day, and we just stayed in touch for a year and just clicked," he said.

Santogold, meanwhile, bought Andrew a four-track recorder and guitar, after he tore his ACL while snowboarding.

"Me and my friends used to f--- around and freestyle in the mountains or on the chairlift for jokes," he says. "I took some of those little raps and just started singing them over the tracks that I made. It was real private. Then, Santi stole it from the house and brought it to the producer she was working with at the time, Shitake Monkey, who ended producing my record."

Lucky for him she did. As he awaits his own album's release, Andrew said he's thankful his fiancé gave him that necessary push and couldn't be prouder to see her take off with her own solo album.

"I saw the whole process when she was struggling, going in-between jobs and trying to do this whole thing," he says. "It's rewarding for me just to see it finally happen. All of her friends -- we knew how talented she was and it was a matter of time."
